Inspired by Alvin Lucier’s audio work “I am sitting in a room,” this experimental sound piece explores the computer as an audio space.

The movement of the cursor is captured and used as four parametric inputs: the position and speed on horizontal, vertical axes. The values are scaled up, triggering sin waves at different frequencies, articulating a beeping noise that gets quieter over time.

By including an audio recording of my speech, the work also becomes a tool of personal expression. As I turned the knobs and pushed on the limit of the software, the existence of myself diminished, so as the meaning of words vanished, becoming rhythms and pitches, generating cold and emotionless, even irritating sounds. It adds a metaphoric narrative of me diving into cyberspace, getting overwhelmed, and losing my individuality.

Special thanks to my classmates for putting the words together as a sentence.
